PROJECT EVALUATION

At the very first stage of the project, I had a brief idea of what I wanted to do, this being to focus completely on myself and prioritise my opinion of my work in order to make work that I am happy with. My main goal was for this project to have a more psychological and deeper meaning to it then past projects, and to ensure this happened I needed to put my full focus into this project to make sure I was being honest and genuine. My project did change slightly from what it was originally, however the original theme still lingers in the context, as instead of focusing on the idea of liking my work, as I progressed, I started to look deeper into why I don’t like my work and what was stopping me from this.

Throughout the project I was researching artists of all different categories, such as music, photography, literature, fine art, animation etc. I think this was crucial for me as I wanted this project to be really free and not be limited for choice and looking at all types of media gave me a lot of inspiration for my outcomes and for outcomes in the future. I honestly think the musical research was the most beneficial, such as Lil Peep, Death Grips and Nirvana, as when I would create whilst listening to music or base my work on the emotions the music would give me, I would create outcomes that I felt were successful and had a lot of meaning to them, which was my initial goal.

Experimentation was something I delved into this project, I tried all sorts of things such as screen printing, lino printing, painting, pens, photography, videography etc. Even though the outcomes may not have been successful or to a standard that I was happy with, I’m still grateful to have tried them out as now they are an option for future outcomes and have taught me to stop limiting my options. Something that stuck out to me the most this project was the satisfaction I got from creating naturally and not digitally. I started to rely on photoshop and procreate beforehand and neglected using pen or paper, and I think this was a massive part of feeling as if my work wasn’t personal. When I started to use more traditional mediums, I felt more connected to the work, and found it easier to portray emotion.

My planning in this project could have been better, I find that I am very against structure and planning when it comes to projects as I believe it interrupts the creative flow and I find myself playing it safe and making “boring” work, whereas when I let the work go where it needs to go and get into the rhythm of creating, I enjoy it more and find it a lot easier to work and be creative in general. As a result of this I am never on time, and even if I do plan something, I don’t stick to it, and this is something I seriously need to work on, I just thrive when there is 0 pressure.

The reflective aspect of the project started off really well, I was recording my feelings, ideas and plans into workflow every day, and this helped me to stay on track, not forget anything or not lose any ideas, and to successfully build up more and more context. On 04/04/21 I had a breakthrough moment which I captured in my reflection, and I find it really heartbreaking, because at the time I felt so happy with my work, I felt focused and for once I felt successful, but sadly it all came crashing down afterwards. Shortly afterwards, I found out I didn’t get into CSM, and at this point in the project I flopped completely. I took a week off because I could not successfully create or continue as I felt like a failure. After I got back on my feet, I was extremely behind, and couldn’t finish 2 of the outcomes I had in mind, one being a photography shoot and the other being a video.

To communicate my outcomes, I posted them all of social media for everyone to see. As much as this sounds quite small and simple, it was very scary and I didn’t want to be judged as my work was very expressive and could be taken the wrong way. Honestly, I’m not completely sure if I achieved my goal, as I may be more honest in my work and genuine to myself, but I’m still not satisfied with it. I think maybe it I didn’t get the bad news towards the end then things would have worked out a lot differently as I wouldn’t have fallen behind and maybe would have completed all the outcomes.

Looking forward I feel I definitely have a tiny idea of what I want to look into and experiment with in the future. I can use the ideas I never got to open up in future projects and use the things I've learned such as time management and new mediums in the future wherever it takes me. If I could do it differently with more time I definitely would, I’d create all the outcomes I had in mind and experiment a lot more, but instead of regretting what I didn’t do, I’m going to use this in the future as a lesson.
