Project Review

Part 2 of the course helped me gain a lot of knowledge and understanding that I can use in the future, such as recording all my thoughts, prioritising research and my sketchbook, and trying to shift my focus from the end result. This has now allowed me to stop overthinking, which is something I did constantly throughout Part 2. Part 2 has taught me that I can’t just spit out amazing pieces over and over, and to understand that I’m going to make mistakes and the process can be difficult. I’m now aware that the more you put in, the more you get out, as you have to try and no one can do this for you. Being in a Graphic pathway is something so important to me, as I’ve always appreciated art in all forms, and being able to open up that interest and make something of it is helpful to for my mental health. It’s a reason to wake up in the morning and express my thoughts and worries in a way I can understand it.

Project Concept & Description

My aim for this project is to discover an essence of myself that I don’t yet know. What is my style? What do I like? Who am I? I find that social media has created this toxic book of rules that define whether or not I am successful, leading me to forget who I am and lose a part of myself as I determine my worth through social media. The painting, Contemplation of Creatures by Vladmir Kush acts as a reminder for me, to remember that we are all just a part of nature, and our goal in life is whatever we choose it to be. I’m using the Guilty Pleasures project from Part 2 as a starting point, due to the fact that during this project I was analysing what a guilty pleasure is through someone else’s life, and now I will be analysing my own life and my own actions, in an attempt to normalise my own characteristics, even if they aren’t trending on social media. The problem that I always find myself coming across is hating my work due to the fact that doesn’t feel sincere. I focus too much on what other people will think of my work vs what my work means to me, and as a result none of my work genuinely relates to me as a person and I feel disconnected, so in this project I want to overcome this problem and be completely raw and genuine with my feelings and emotions, and let the project unravel itself within this theme.

Project Evaluation

In order to achieve my aim, I’m going to keep a visual diary in my sketchbook and experiment daily. I want to limit my sources of other student’s work, as I find myself getting stuck in an endless cycle of obsessing over everyone else's work instead of my own. Lastly, I’m going to focus more on emotion instead of aesthetics, and to prioritise the journey rather than the outcome. I will use rules defined by time, duration, and materials, to challenge myself and give boundaries for myself to push against or support the project.

Project Action Plan and Timetable:

To make sure I stay on the right track, I will be gaining peer feedback from friends and family on a weekly basis, and emailing tutors when I feel I’ve lost track of what I’m doing. To make sure I’m staying on task, I’m creating a set of rules to follow, to help myself when feeling lost or confused, such as: use one medium a day, visit one different location a week, document all my meals and how they made me feel. These rules will help me create something every day as I will have something to reference it by. When testing the success of my work, I will look at each piece or sketch I create and ask the question: Do I feel a connection to this, or is this just in my sketchbook because it would look great on social media?
